Brian Degenhardt, via Jeff Johnson, was thoughtful enough to pass on the
announcement of Bevan's passing to all of us.  We are all friends of
Bevan's from UCSD. Some of us had a few classes with Bevan.  Some of us
socialized with him on occasion.  Some of us never had the pleasure of
meeting him in person. But we all considered him a dear friend.  The
common thread that tied us together is the UCSD Talk mailing list
(mailto:talk-mib.ucsd@org), made up primarily of UCSD students and recent
alumni, and of which Bevan was an active participant.  The list is an open
forum of questions, ideas, random thoughts, and generic chatting, on which
Bevan's voice was often heard.  He once said that the members of the list
are like a family.  We thought we should take that sentiment to heart at
his time, and tell you that we share your loss and your grief.  You have
all of our deepest condolances.

We plan on holding our own memorial ceremony for Bevan in San Diego this
weekend.  Something a little nontraditional, but we think Bevan would find
it appropriate and appreciate it.  Several of the list members who have
moved away since graduating will be coming to town to participate. Be
assured, Bevan will be well remembered.

We thought you might like to hear some perspectives on why we thought
Bevan was so special and how a few individual members of the list will
remember him.

Despite Bevan's incomparable technical prowess, boundless wit, and
unshakable good nature, I shall remember him as a writer.  Bevan was one
of the few people on the list who, every once in a while, would post
something so eloquent, incisive, and insightful that all could
immediately relate on a personal level, and nothing more needed to be
said.  That ability is a rare thing to find among the highly technically
skilled, and will be missed commensurately.  We have lost a unique
chronicler of our times and our plight.  I can only hope to that somehow
we may find the humor, insight, and direction his words have provided us
in the past from another source now.

I met Bevan over email on the mib.org lists when I was looking for a
roomate for the summer.  It's kind of odd agreeing to live with someone
whom you have never seen.  However, I couldn't have found a better
roomate.  He was so unbelievably intelligent, yet so quick to drop to my
level and explain things that were simple to him.  As a consequence I
spent many evenings standing in the doorway of his room asking questions. 
I'll miss such a great mentor, and a good friend.

I will remember Bevan as a friend who was consistently helpful, friendly,
and selfless.  On many occasions, he willingly offered assistance, both
technical and otherwise. One such occasion especially stands out in my mind.
A few years ago, several students discovered that UCSD's Computer Science
Department planned to terminate Dr. Keith Muller, a widely-respected professor,
in order to save some money.  Many of us were outraged, and began to toss
around the idea of a petition. Bevan stepped up, and strongly encouraged us to
organize a petition.  As the plan solidified, Bevan was one of the few who
lead the work on the petition. I was proud to be able to work with Bevan, and
was proud to see the petition eventually have an influence on Dr. Muller's
employment. I admired Bevan's many good qualities, and will truely miss him.

Like everyone else listed below, I met Bevan on the talk-ucsd
list years ago when I first started at UCSD. Bevan was the 
one person who would consistently reply to my sometimes 
repetitive questions. As someone else mentioned, Bevan was 
always around to offer you assistance or answer a question. I 
had the opportunity to meet Bevan during the Spring of 1998 
when a group of us from this list gathered to play paint ball.
It was during that day, that I discovered Bevan and I shared
a passion for hiking and backpacking. Something I understand 
he enjoyed back home. Next April when I embark on my first 
multi-month hike from Mexico to Canada, I would like to 
dedicate the California leg in memory of Bevan. I'm sure in
spirit he'll be hiking right along with me. God Bless to you
